Wayne “Squirrel” Louis Courier, 80, of Rapid River, passed away on Saturday, September 24, at Bishop Noa Home.
Wayne, son of William and Ruth (Provo) Courier, was born on September 13, 1936 in Escanaba and graduated from Escanaba High School in 1955.
Wayne was a jack of all trades who could fix or build most anything, including his home on Ogontz which was built on the original Provo homestead. He worked hard & he played hard – sometimes working up to three jobs at a time so he could provide for his family and still have enough left over to enjoy his many toys and hobbies.
He worked as an assembler/welder for Harnischfeger, retiring when it closed in 1982, but he never really slowed down.
Wayne was a member of the UAW, Rapid River Lion’s Club where he was an “Outstanding Lion” of the year, Wildlife Relief, and the U.P. Sportsmen’s Alliance. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was also a blood donor, donating over thirty gallons of blood during his lifetime.
Wayne is survived by his longtime companion, Judy Lauria; children, Cindy (Dan) Homa of Marinette, Fr. Rick Courier of Escanaba, and Domenic (Jennifer) Lauria; grandchildren, Joe Kleikamp, Katie and Kelsey Pittman, and Nicholas and Emily Lauria; great grandchildren Angel Chrisman, Jocelyn VanDrese, and Benjamin Cairns; and siblings, Barb Leny of Myrtle Beach, SC and Shirley (Norman) Ross of Waukesha, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents and the mother of his children, Marlene Bedard Maki.
“Time had not been kind to Dad, taking away the things he loved doing most – hunting, fishing, and tinkering. Rest well, Dad, I know you and Bud are scouting out the best spot to set your blind and checking out all the best fishing holes. Love you, Dad.”
