Viola B. DeBen

Viola B. DeBen, 95, previously of Bark River, passed away on Friday morning, January 15, 2016 at Christian Park Health Care Center.

She was born on September 16, 1920 in Norway, MI, daughter of Nickolas and Devena (Greenleaf) Heydens. Viola graduated from Norway High School in 1938 and later earned her degree in nursing.

Viola served in the U.S. Army from October 1, 1942 until her honorable discharge on January 18, 1946. She served during WWII in Central Burma and was a First Lieutenant Army Nurse. Viola earned an Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Service Star, One Overseas Service Bar, American Theatre Campaign Medal, and a World War II Victory Medal. She was very proud of the time she served.

On June 28, 1947, Viola married Paul F. DeBen at St. Barbara’s Church in Vulcan, MI. He preceded her in death on February 6, 1981.

Viola was employed for Pinecrest Medical Care Facility for many years until her retirement in 1971.

She was a member of the American Legion Post 438 of Bark River and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Bark River.

She was survived by three children, Suzanne (Felix) Sacheck of Escanaba, Donald (Theresa) DeBen of Minnesota and Sherry DeBen of Bark River; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Amber Benjamin) Sacheck, Chris (Neena) Wilcox, and Melissa (Kenny Olson) Kishman; great grandchildren, Madison Sacheck, Audrey and Leah Wilcox and Anthony Olson; sister in law, Rose Morosini and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Paul; she was preceded in death by her brothers, Art and Herman Morosini; sister in law, Julian Morosini; and great grandson, Chase Miles Olson.

Visitation will be on Thursday, January 21, 2016 from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. Military services will take place at 3 p.m. and the funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. with Deacon Mike LeBeau officiating.

Burial will take place on Friday morning in the Norway Twp. Cemetery.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the DeBen family with arrangements.

  1. We will all miss Vi very much. She was always very friendly and helpful to all of us. We would be at the service, but we are currently in Rockledge, Fl.
    Our prayers are with all of you.

  2. Aunt Vi was a delight to be around. I remember her laugh and smile from the many Christmas Eve’s our families would get together as well as other family or community events. God bless Sue, Sherry, Donald and the entire family. May she rest in peace.
