Thomas “TJ” J. Elegeert, 54, of Gladstone, passed away early Monday morning, April 10, 2017 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born October 20, 1962, in Escanaba, MI, son of Thomas Elegeert and Linda (Lamberg) Erickson. Tom was raised in Gladstone and graduated from Gladstone High School. He attended Bay College and Northern Michigan University.
On June 29, 2002, Tom married the former Jaclyn “Jackie” Jenshak in Escanaba.
He worked for 35 years as an Electrical Instrument Technician at Verso.
If ever looking for Tom, you were sure to find him at his camp on Beaver Lane in Perkins. Camp was his sanctuary and where he would go to regenerate. A pasty in the oven, A Packer game on the TV, and a 90 degree log burning in the woodstove was the making for Tom’s perfect day. As soon as the spring thaw came, you could see him with his metal detector in hand; finding and collecting antique bottles and coins was such a thrill. From the time he was young, Tom learned how to master the skill of Amateur Ham Radio (wd8ixw) from Gramps before he could even drive a car. Being that Tom was no stranger to the outdoors, he volunteered his time as a Boy Scout Leader with his sons in the Gladstone Troop in their younger years. Every June and July, when the camper was out you knew that Tom and Jackie were ready to hit the road for camping or to Wisconsin for Rock Fest, Country Fest or EAA AirVenture with his NMU sweatshirt and Leinie’s hat in hand. Sophie and Maggie, “the puppers”, were always along whenever Tom was on one of his many adventures. They enjoyed running freely alongside Tom at Buckeye Bay, camp, or a drive through Gladstone. They never failed to put a smile on his face.
Tom is survived by his loving wife Jackie of Gladstone; children, Mark (Elise) Elegeert of Gladstone, Peter (Alyssa) Elegeert of Powers, Breanne (David) Knowlton of Neenah WI, Jeremy (Christina) Guindon of DePere WI, and Jacob Guindon of DePere, WI; parents, Thomas (Gladys) Elegeert of Brampton and Linda (Lamberg) Erickson of Gladstone; siblings, Kim (Jack) Lagina of Howard WI and Renae (Christopher) Defiore of Gladstone; grandchildren, Chelsey Knowlton of Neenah WI, and Calvin Elegeert of Gladstone; nieces, Kara Mueller and Sam Lagina.
He was preceded in death by Alan Erickson; and his grandparents, Thomas and Beaula Elegeert and George and Elsie Lamberg.
A celebration of Tom’s life will take place on Saturday, April 29th at the Gladstone Yacht Club. His family will greet friends and relatives from 4 – 8 p.m.
The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Elegeert family.
