Raymond “Ray” Leslie Payment, 68, of Powers, passed away on Friday, January 13th, 2017, at Dickinson Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born in Sault Ste. Marie, MI on August 21, 1948, the son of Thomas and Lois (Jones) Payment. Ray attended school in Sault Ste. Marie until he moved to Escanaba before his Senior year. He graduated from Escanaba High School in 1966. He went to college at Northern Michigan University and graduated in 1970 with a degree in Accounting.
Ray worked for Schneider, Larche, and Haapala for several years prior to opening a business with Bob Schuat. He eventually opened his own CPA firm with offices in Escanaba and Stephenson.
He loved sports as a youth. He excelled in football and was a member of Escanaba’s first wrestling team. He remained physically active throughout his life by playing baseball, basketball, racquetball, golf and canoe racing.
Ray was an avid outdoorsman. He was passionate about fishing and hunting. He traveled out West and to Saskatchewan, Canada many times throughout his life with friends on hunting excursions. He loved spending time at camp feeding his deer, hunting, playing cribbage and being with friends. He sponsored many organizations throughout the years. Ray was a member of Normenco Sportsman Club, Ducks Unlimited, Elks and was the treasurer for Wildlife Unlimited.
Ray will be remembered as a man who always had a smile on his face. He lived life to the fullest and had fun. He treated his friends like family and would do anything for them. He will be greatly missed by many people.
Ray is survived by his fiancé, Lisa Linder and her daughter, Jordyn, of Powers, MI; daughter, Michelle (Paul) Bracket of Gladstone, MI; son, Brian (Stephanie) Payment of Lansing, MI; grandchildren, Ella, Luke and Andrew Bracket; brother, Thomas (Phyllis) Payment of Brimley, MI; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Stewart; and sister Mavis DeVere.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 20th, from 3 – 7 p.m. (Eastern Time) at Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. Services will be held at 6 p.m. at Crawford Funeral Home. A light luncheon will be served during visitation hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family and a memorial will be decided on a later date.
