Norbert DeGroot, 72, of Arnold, passed away early Tuesday morning, July 28, 2015 at his home.
He was born in Escanaba on June 22, 1943, son of the late Joseph and Mary (Guntlisbergen) DeGroot.
Norbert graduated from Holy Name Catholic High School in 1961.
On January 22, 1977, Norbert married the former Bonnie Ehrenberg at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Northland.
He worked as a beef cattle and potato farmer for most of his life.
Norbert was a member of Gwinn Knights of Columbus, an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Northland, and was President of Wells Township School Board.
He enjoyed making maple syrup, spending time in the woods, flying airplanes, and being with his family and grandkids.
Norbert is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie DeGroot; daughters, Tracy (Rodney) Porath of Soo Hill and Tina (Jeremy) Aalto of Gladstone; sons, Shawn (Melissa) DeGroot of Norway, James DeGroot of Menasha, WI and Jason (Theresa) DeGroot of Iron Mountain; sisters, Rita Bruce of Arnold, Therese (Carl) Stenberg of Bark River and Bernadette (Richard) Haeusler of Bark River; brothers, Henry (Rosemary) DeGroot of Northland and Fr. Francis DeGroot of Escanaba; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary DeGroot; and brother, Richard DeGroot.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 31, 2015, from 4 to 6 p.m. at St. Anne’s Church in Escanaba. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 6 p.m. officiated by Rev. Fran DeGroot and Rev. Al Mott. A meal will follow in the church hall.
Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Northland.
