Michael J. Soper

Michael J. “Mike’ Soper, Jr. 62, of Gladstone (Flat Rock), passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at home of natural causes.

He was born on December 27, 1954 in Escanaba, son of Michael J. and Elvera (Gauthier) Soper, Sr. Mike lived all of his life in the Flat Rock area, graduating from Gladstone High School in 1973.

Mike married the love of his life and soul mate, Wendy Lee Benning Wight on September 25, 2003. She preceded him in death on September 11, 2007.

Mike worked construction as a millwright and for the mines for many years. He was a member of the Millwrights Local 1510 in Escanaba.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and his faithful dogs, Dutches, Lady and Nina who were all rescued. Mike was talented in the art of fixing almost anything.

Among survivors include his stepchildren, Lacie Wight of Escanaba, Jody Brezsko of Brampton and Kenneth Trel of Appleton; seven brothers, Steve Soper of Winthrop Harbor, IL, William Soper of Cornell, James Soper of Frankfort, IL, Tom (Donna) Soper of Pine Ridge, Richard Soper of Flat Rock, Donald (Candy) Soper of Cornell and Tim Soper of Danforth; three sisters, Rosemary Berglund of Escanaba, Donna (John) Lehouillier of Flat Rock and Debra (Bob) Donaghe of Escanaba; and many nieces and nephews who will miss him greatly but will cherish the many memories made hunting and fishing with their uncle.

In addition to his parents and wife, Wendy, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and John Soper and a sister, Carol Danser.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

  1. I worked with Mike at my brother-in-laws French fry plant years ago. He & his brother used to bring crockpots full of squirrels & leave the carcasses in the lunchroom for me to dispose of. Good times. Lol
    My condolences to Mike’s family & friends.
    Rest well Mike. You were a good guy.
