Merton D. MacRae

Merton D. MacRae, 87, of Bradenton, FL (former Escanaba resident), passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at the Braden River Nursing Home.

He was born on May 11, 1933 in Escanaba, son of Marcus and Verna (Gascon) MacRae. Merton graduated from Escanaba and went on to Northern Michigan University where he received his bachelor’s degree.

Merton served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1960. He was an x-ray technician while serving. Merton received the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

Early in his career Merton was employed at Harnischfeger. He went on to become a probation officer for Delta County.

Merton was a member of the Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his sister, Mary (Thomas) Jenkin of Savage, MN; five nieces; and one nephew.

In was preceded in death by his parents.

Public graveside services will be held on Monday, August 17th at 11 AM at Holy Cross Cemetery in Escanaba with Father Fran DeGroot officiating with military honors to follow.

The Crawford Funeral Home of Escanaba is assisting the family.

  1. Mert was a VERY special man. He was well loved by the Lord family. He has a special place in our hearts.

  2. Mert was a member of the local “Packer Backer Club” in the late ’60’s. He was also employed at Pete’s Grocery, Baum’s Hartware and Larry Stein’s Haberdashery. You would see him at the Escanaba Elks monthly Brunch making and serving pancakes and also on Sat. mornings at the Denny Lord home. He was a great family friend and will be greatly missed.

  3. I remember Mert being a big part of the LeQuia family.
    He never forgot a birthday, anniversary or special occasion. If you needed
    help on a project he was there. A wonderful man and he will be missed.
    Rest in peace my dear friend.
