Melvin J. “Jack” Berglund, 80, Escanaba, passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2015 at Bishop Noa Home where he had been a patient for five days.
He was born in Escanaba on August 29, 1934, son of the late Melvin C. and Blanche (Greenfield) Berglund.
Jack graduated from Escanaba High School in 1952.
On October 3, 1957, Jack married the former Rosemary Soper in Ft. Lewis, WA.
He was a member of the Highland Golf Club where he golfed with his family golfing buddies and had enjoyed much friendly competition with them. Jack was also a member of St. Anne’s Church.
Jack was employed at Escanaba Daily Press from 1952 until 1996 and served the in U.S. Army at Fort Lewis, WA and Bremerton, Germany from 1957 to 1959. He played softball with the Mead No. 2 team and was able to pitch a no-hit game. He enjoyed golfing and was fortunate enough to get two hole-in-ones during his golfing years. Jack loved all types of hunting, especially bow hunting, rifle and black powder with his special life-long friends at Camp 30 South. Jack and Rosemary hosted many gatherings at Camp 30 including, in earlier years, the annual Woodtick Picnic and Octoberfest.
He is survived by his loving wife, Rosemary; daughter, Judith L. (Gregg) Colclasure of Escanaba; son, John D. (Francene) Berglund of Mattawan, MI; and grandchildren, Anna K. Berglund of Allendale, MI and Marcus J. Berglund of Mattawan, MI.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2015 at St. Anne’s Church with Rev. Fran DeGroot officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the St. Anne’s Church Building Fund.
