Marvin J. “Marv” Nelson, 72, Cornell, passed away on Sunday, August 3, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family after battling pancreatic cancer for 14 months.
He was born on December 29, 1941, in Cornell, the son of Adolph and Minnie (Kossow) Nelson Sr.
On October 24, 1964, he married the former Donna VanDrese of Cornell, whom he had known since kindergarten, at Holy Family Church in Flat Rock.
They made their home in Cornell where they raised their three children. Marvin started a logging business, Marvin Nelson Forest Products, in 1971. With a lot of hard work and determination and his sons continuing efforts, the business was awarded the Michigan Logger of the Year Award in 2013.
He was a member of Holy Family Church, Michigan Association of Timbermen, American Loggers Council, and Great Lakes Timber Professional Association.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Donna; daughter, Lori (Chuck) Clark of Cornell; sons, Brian (Maureen) Nelson and David (Christy) Nelson both of Cornell; nine grandchildren, Nicholas Sundberg, Jennifer (Brandon) Rogers, Kyle Sundberg Nelson, Christopher (Michaela Lippens) Nelson, Tyler Nelson, Nathan Nelson, Samantha Nelson, Josh Nelson, Cody Nelson; two great grandchildren, Carter Dubord and Parker Rogers; brothers, Leonard Nelson, Floyd (Judy) Nelson of Cornell, Lloyd (Darlene) Nelson and Lawrence Nelson of Escanaba; sisters, Elsie Caron of Escanaba, May Ring and Gladys Pearson of Cornell; father in law, Gilbert VanDrese; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Paul Sundberg; brothers, Adolf Nelson Jr. and Roy Nelson, Sr.; sisters in law, Eileen Nelson, Faye Nelson, Helen Nelson; brothers in law, Earl (Delbert) Ring, Sr., Ed Pearson; and mother in law, Lorraine VanDrese.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2014, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 5 p.m. at Holy Family Church in Flat Rock with Rev. John Longbucco officiating. A luncheon will follow in church hall.
Burial will be in Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
