Lawrence A. “Larry” McRae, 75, of 516 S. 14th St., Escanaba, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at OSF St. Francis Hospital of a long illness with C.O.P.D.

Larry was born on March 29, 1940 in Norway, MI oldest son of Lawrence J. “Mac” and Anne (DeMuri) McRae.

He graduated in 1958 from Holy Name High School, which was the first class to graduate in the first four years, as a high school.

On September 19, 1987 he married his loving wife Dolores Kaltenbach at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

He was employed by the Chicago & North Western and Union Pacific Railroad, retiring in January of 1997 with 32 years of service in various departments, ending in the Mechanical Department. Larry also worked on the Old #6 Wooden Ore Docks, site of the current conveyor belt system. In his earlier years, he was a baker for Mickey’s Bakery & Pasties and then sailed on the Great Lakes for Bethlehem Steel Corp., on the ore boat, S.S. Steelton.

Larry enjoyed deer hunting, watching NASCAR and was a fan of the Detroit Red Wings, Lions, Tigers and Pistons. He also spent time gardening and trimming his green lawn. Most of all, he enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Larry is survived by his wife Dolores of Escanaba; six children, Shellie (Jim) Tsiopelas of Greenwood Village, CO, Lonnie (Roger) McRae of Denver, CO, Dale (Ana) McRae of Escanaba, MI, Doreen (Dave) Bernier of Appleton, WI, Cindy Lueskow of Des Moines, WA and Tammy (Guy) Hurkmans, Jr. of Atoka, TN; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren; brother, Jerome (Denise) McRae of Kenosha, WI; sister, Barbara (Daniel “Jake”) Dagenais of Overton, NV; many cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by a son, Darren Mason.

Visitation will be on Monday, February 8th from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. A eulogy will be shared at 3:15 p.m. by the family of Larry. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 4 p.m. at St. Joseph and St. Patrick Church with Rev. Eric Olson officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.

Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Holy Name Catholic School in Larry’s name.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the McRae family with arrangements.

He will be missed when they are hunting at bingo where we shared alot of laughs and especially at Elmers restaurant where he was a faithful patron.   5. The McRae Family, Your father was very special to us, we were neighbors of him and Dolores for 12 years. My special memory was when I would get home from work and there would be a vase of Peonies at my back door. He was a special man! We will miss him!
