Kathleen “Duddy” (Shomin) Richards, 93, of Escanaba, passed away on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI.
Daughter of Croatian immigrants, Frank and Mary (Macan) Shomin, Kathleen was born on April 26, 1923. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1941.
On November 22, 1947, she married Joseph Richards at St. Joseph Church in Escanaba. He preceded her in death on June 22, 1990.
Kathleen worked as a clerk in the Montgomery Ward Credit Department and later as Deputy to the County Treasurer at the Delta County Courthouse. But first and foremost, she was a loving wife and mother.
Kathleen was a member of St. Joseph and St. Patrick Church and St. Patrick’s Ladies Guild. She belonged to the OSF Golden Care Program and volunteered at the OSF gift shop. She also volunteered at the Bishop Noa Home, sharing her Bingo enthusiasm with the residents.
Kathleen enjoyed bowling, golfing, knitting, playing cards and occasionally visiting the casino. She was an avid cribbage player and enjoyed the pastime with her children and grandchildren.
In addition to her many interests, she possessed a caring nature for friends, neighbors and even total strangers–reaching out a helping hand whenever she could. In short, she had a heart of gold.
She is survived by her children: Jerry (Judy) Richards of Okemos, MI, Maureen (Philip) Dattilo of Plymouth, MI, Mark (Brigid) Richards of Saginaw, MI, Kenneth Richards of Milwaukee, WI, Jeffrey (Cindy) Richards of Denver, CO and John (Mary) Richards of Jackson, MI; ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Patricia Schomin; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers: Frank, Anthony “Ben” and James “Jiggs” and three sisters: Sophie Paterick, Veronica “Verky” Cook and Marian “Dia” Kidd.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 1st from 1:00-4:30 p.m. with eulogies shared by the family at 3:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian burial will be at 5:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Church in Escanaba with Rev. Eric Olson officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.
