K. David Hirn

K. David Hirn Sr., 82, of Escanaba, passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Peabody Manor in Appleton, WI surrounded by family.

David was born in Escanaba on December 29, 1935, son of Dr. Edward and Sarah (Miller) Hirn. He was raised in Escanaba and spent most of his life locally. He graduated from St. Joseph High School where he was recognized for his athletic abilities in basketball and golf .

On August 10, 1957, David married Shirley Boudreau at St. Anne’s Catholic Church. Together they celebrated 60 years of marriage and raised their 5 children.

He received his Mortuary Science degree from WIMS. He was a funeral director from 1957-1962, then worked for Nabisco from 1963-1973 and American Greeting Corporation from 1973 until his retirement in 1997. Dave was honored to receive the American Greeting Corporation Mid-West Salesman of the Year award.

Dave loved golfing, cooking, the arts, travel, animals, and spending time with family. He was a dedicated RSVP volunteer and enjoyed his time as a Reading Buddy at Cameron Elementary and a driver for renal care patients.

Listed among survivors include his wife, Shirley; children, David (Carol) Hirn Jr., Laurie (Jeff) Beggs, Matthew (Jill) Hirn, Anthony “Tony” (Jenny) Hirn and Lisa (Craig) Fosmo; grandchildren, Kristin, Anne, Abby, Molly, Ethan, Heather, Josh, Stephen, Ashley, Andrew, Gabe, Clark and Meredith; great-grandchildren, Jenna, Megan, Wyatt, Henrik, Axel and Sophia; brother, Ronald (Barbara) Hirn; sister-in-law, Pat (Bill) Goodreau; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Sarah; and siblings, Edward M. Hirn Jr., Betty Jule Langenfeld, William “Bill” Hirn and Raymond “Ray” Hirn; and father and mother in law, Leo “Bud” and Ann Boudreau.

Visitation will be on Saturday, April 14 th from 9 – 11:30 a.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13 th Street, Escanaba. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12 noon at St. Joseph and St. Patrick Church with Rev. Eric Olson officiating. A luncheon will follow the service to celebrate Dave’s life at St. Anne’s Church hall, 817 S. Lincoln Rd, Escanaba.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice and Theda Clark Hospice Volunteer Pet Therapy Services, which brought hours of comfort and joy to Dave during the 3 months he resided at the Peabody Manor. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Hirn family.

  3. Mrs. Hirn, Tony and Family,

    From the first time I met David, he was a substitute teacher in a class I was in, I knew he was a nice man. Ever since that day, every time our paths crossed, he took the time to chat with me. Many times upon running into you and David, at Kobasics, after chatting with David, I had to think about what is it was I went to get at the store, our conversation clouding my memory. David was one of my favorite people. Just a pleasant soul.
