Joseph J. Bushey, 92, of Escanaba, passed away on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born on January 3, 1926 in Escanaba, son of Abraham and Bridgette Z. “Marie” Boucher.  The family name was later changed to the current “Bushey” spelling.

On July 5, 1947, Joe married Joyce Fillis at St. Joseph Church in Escanaba.

He began his career as a butcher at the A&P grocery store. His love for his job led him to opening up his own butcher shop in 1960. He was fondly known as “Joe, the meat man Bushey” by his many customers and the community. He owned and operated Bushey Meats with the help of his family until his health forced him to retire at the age of 82. He also worked at LCL Transit as a part time truck driver and drove school bus for the Escanaba Area Schools for 10 years both while also running his own business. Many students who rode his bus will remember ice cream day when on the last day of the school year Joe would treat them all to ice cream.

Joe was one of the first members of the Delta County Credit Union and proudly served 30 years on their Board of Directors. He was awarded the U.P. MCUL Person of the Year award in 2012. He also was a member of the Wells Lions Club for many years and the Escanaba Exchange Club.

He loved traveling around the world with his wife, Joyce sometimes accompanied by their daughters. They also enjoyed camping trips and loved spending time at their camp in Stonington with family and friends. His grilling talent was well known and he could often be found grilling steaks for parties. He cooked the steaks for the annual Red Shirt Night at the Escanaba Eagles Club for many years. His best time however was the time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren who all loved their “Papa Joe”.
