Joseph E. “Joe” Russell, 53, of Escanaba, passed away on Tuesday, November 7, 2018 at UP Health System – Marquette.

He was born on November 23, 1963 in Escanaba, son of Walter and Patricia (Packenham) Russell.

Joe graduated from Escanaba High School, class of 1982 and was a lifelong resident of Escanaba.

Joe was employed as a custodian for St. Francis Hospital and then was a DNR officer, working 25 years at the Pocket Park. He retired in June of 2016.

Joe loved tinkering with his motorcycle, spending time with his dogs, fishing, hunting, and visiting lighthouses in the U.P. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan.

He was involved with many organizations which he enjoyed, including the Whitetails Association.

Among survivors include his sister, Betty Belongia of Escanaba; nieces, Michelle (Jacob) Desitets, Kimberly McKnight and Jessica (Brent) Themel; great nieces and nephews, Keaton, Kaleb, Kaitlyn, Brayden, Dominic and Madalyn; very special friend and neighbor, Mike (Verena) Williamson of Escanaba.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

For everyone who was involved in Joe’s life whether professionally, provided care for him during his health issues or personally, you are all appreciated. The friendships that were created were treasured by Joe.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorials in Joe’s name may be made to the Delta Animal Shelter, 6975 County 426 M.5 Road, Escanaba, MI 49829.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the family.

  1. Thoughts and prayers to Betty and her family. Joe was my childhood buddy and I have very fond memories of growing up with him and making mud pies. RIP Joey!!
