John R. “Jack” Thennes, 85, Garden, passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at U.P. Health Systems- Marquette.
He was born in Gladstone on August 4, 1930, son of the late Nicholas and Ida (Zimmel) Thennes. Jack resided in Garden for the past 80 years.
He attended school in both Gladstone and Garden.
On August 10, 1948, Jack married the former Dorothy Tatrow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Garden.
Jack was employed as a heavy equipment operator hauling pulp for his father, a roller operator for Thorton Construction in Hancock, and he worked on the Mackinaw Bridge. He retired from the Delta County Road Commission in 1993.
He enjoyed carpenter work making desks and cabinets. Jack was a very active member of St. John the Baptist Church. He was also an alter server at the Nahma Indian Church.
Jack is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy of Garden; children, Sandra Doran and John (Ann) Thennes Jr. both of Escanaba, and Karen (Charles) Paulson of Garden; sister, Bernice Tatrow of Garden; grandchildren, Mary (Jason) Haindl, Keri (Paul) Gerou, Troy (Rachel) Paulson, Charles “CJ” Paulson, Kristen (Neil) Holshoe, and Amanda (Ryan) Baker; great grandchildren, Chelsey Paulson and Cody Gerou, and Brooklyn, Hailey, and Harper Holshoe; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lenore Prezsner; brothers, Irvin Thennes and Nick Thennes Jr.; and son in law, Michael Doran.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 1st at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Garden with Fr. Mariuz Sierhart officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.
