John Petrick, 81, Perronville, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2016 at his home following a courageous 12 year battle with cancer.

He was born in Kingsford, MI, son of Emil and Elizabeth (Mankiewicz) Petrick. John graduated from Bark River –Harris High School in 1952 and then attended Michigan Tech from 1952 until 1954. John left Tech to join the Army.

John served in the U.S. Army from January 21, 1955 until his honorable discharge in December 19, 1957. He served during the Korean Conflict and received a Good Conduct Medal.

On May 4, 1968, John married Judy Ann Gaber at St. Michael’s Church in Perronville.

John was employed with Harnischfeger Corporation for 23 years and then EMP for 15 years until his retirement in 1999.

He was a former member of St. Michael’s Church in Perronville and more currently, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Bark River.

John along with his brother Emeric built the ball field in Perronville. For many years he pitched fast pitch softball. He also managed the girls fast pitch team for many years.

He was a member of the Harris Twp. Volunteer Fire Department and was honored for 30 years of service. He was Fire Chief for over 20 years.

John’s love was gardening. He enjoyed deer hunting and was very proud of his apple orchard and showing people how to graft trees. John was a supporter of the Bark River Harris Bronco Athletics and enjoyed attending all of the sport events.

His greatest pride was his children and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Among survivors include his wife, Judy of Perronville; daughters, Theresa (Kevin) Gatchell of Oshkosh, WI, Mary (Russell) Aird of Gladstone; Carol (Donald) Aird of Green Bay, WI; grandchildren, Katelyn Gatchell, Breanne and Trevor Aird, Sydney, Addison, and Nathan Aird; father in law, Frank Gaber; and sister in law, Karen Evans.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Emeric Petrick.

Visitation will be on Thursday, March 31, 2016 from 4 to 5:45 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Bark River. The Bark River Rheaume-Knauf American Legion Post 438 will have military rites at 5:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 6 p.m. with Rev. Darryl Pepin officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.

Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Perronville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family and a memorial in John’s name will be established at a later date.

A special thank you to Tracy and Betty Jo, John’s oncology nurses. You supported him through his chemo treatments with fun and laughter. An extra special thank you to John’s cousin, Patricia Barra for her unending love, support, and comfort.
