Joan T. Gravelle, 84, of Escanaba, passed away on Friday afternoon, June 10, 2016.
She was born on July 17, 1931 in Escanaba, daughter of Joseph aand Mary (Daily) Summers. Joan attended St. Joseph School and was a lifelong resident of Escanaba.
On September 15, 1961, Joan married Merrill Gravelle, Sr. in Escanaba. He preceded her in death on September 27, 2011.
Joan enjoyed playing scratch off lottery tickets.
She was an Elder of the Sault Ste Marie Chippewa Tribe and of the Soo Hill Church of Christ.
Joan died peacefully in her home with her family by her side. Her survivors were inspired by how she always gave of herself, never asking for anything in return. She would spend hundreds of hours sending cards and letters to her friends and family in times of encouragement, need, and celebration. She was an avid reader and baker, who expressed her love of her family through delicious cinnamon rolls, donuts, and homemade breads. Those who knew Joan are better for it. They will always remember her smile, big heart, and goodwill. After her beloved husband, Merrill, died, she would often say she is going to dance in heaven with him. Joan’s family has found solace because she is now dancing with Merrill in heaven.
Among survivors include her children, Louis (Betty) Williams of Cornell, Theresa Adams of Escanaba, Patty (Joseph) King of Escanaba, John (Diane) Williams of Bark River, Carol Baxter of Gladstone, Daniel (Karen) Gravelle of Bark River, Ann (Charles) Viau of Escanaba and Merrill (Bridgette) Gravelle Jr. of Green Bay; son in law, Richard Ault of Bark River; daughter in law, Linda Williams of Escanaba; 47 grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren; four siblings, Eleanor Artley, Michael (Phyllis) Summers and Patricia Soper all of Escanaba and Marco (Penny) Summers of Washington; sister in law, WInky Summers; dear friend and neighbor, Tim Taylor of Escanaba; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Merrill; Joan was preceded in death by two sons, Otis Williams and Michael Williams; daughter, Mary Ault; brothers, John, Joseph and Willard Summers; and sisters, Carol and Martha Summers.
