James J. “Jim” Potvin, 68, 1417 15.45 Lane, Bark River (Schaffer), passed away at his home on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 surrounded by his family.
Jim was born on September 14, 1946 in Escanaba, son of Joseph A. and Lillian (Nault) Potvin, Sr. He was raised and lived most of his life in the Schaffer area. Jim graduated from Bark River Harris High School in 1965 and attended Bay de Noc Community College.
On July 2, 1966, Jim married Kay Farrell at St. Joseph Church in Foster City.
On October 21, 1966, he joined the Army until his discharge on March 5, 1969. He then joined the National Guard where he served for over 20 years retiring on May 15, 1998 as a Sergeant with the 107th Engineer Battalion.
Jim worked for Harnischfeger Corporation for 17 years as a welder and then was employed with Velmet for a brief time and the Forest Service for 13 years as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement in 2011.
He enjoyed hunting and going to camp. Jim was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.
Survivors include his wife, Kay of Schaffer; daughter, Lisa (Bart) Hall of Bark River; two sons, Jeffery Potvin of Bark River and Chad Potvin of Rapid River; sister, Margaret (Kenneth) Viau of Schaffer; two brothers, Joseph (Rose) “Buckshot” Potvin of Bark River and George (Maureen) Potvin of Schaffer; grandchildren, Zachary (Jessica) Hall, Dustin (Soomin) Hall, and Anthony Potvin.; two great grandchildren, Rooney and Olivia Hall; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 28, 2015 from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Bark River. Military Rites will be at 4 p.m. at the funeral chapel by the Rheaume-Knauf American Legion Post 438 of Bark River. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 6 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Bark River with Rev. Darryl Pepin officiating. A meal will follow the funeral mass in the church hall.
Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Schaffer.
