James D. Brunelle

James “Jim” D. Brunelle, 78, of Escanaba passed away on January 31, 2017, at his home.

Jim was devoted to the Sacred Heart, the rosary and Divine Mercy.

He was born in Escanaba on January 17, 1939, the son of Donald and Beatrice (Boyle) Brunelle. James graduated from Escanaba High School in 1959. Every day before school, James worked at a bakery and a milk route. During his high school years, Jim’s favorite sport was track and cross country, which he excelled in both. His track event was the half mile and won twice at the U.P. Finals.

After graduation, Jim joined the U.S. Air Force. His running skills did not go unnoticed. In the Air Force he became a sprinter, running the 100 and 220 placing in both events in World Wide Air Force track events.

Jim worked for Delta Abstract, and then Michigan Liquor Control for 30 years. He later worked for Pioneer TV and Appliance where he retired from in 2012.

He enjoyed bowling, hunting, cross-country skiing, fly fishing, golfing, softball, and watching western movies.

On, October 31, 1964, James married Sandra Hurthibise at St. Anne’s Church. Jim met Sandy while he was working at Delta Abstract. They went on their first date on Halloween and were married two years later, on Halloween.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra of Escanaba; children, Paul (Keri) Brunelle; grandchildren, Caitlin and Cooper Brunelle; siblings, Donald (Judy) Brunelle of Escanaba and Mary Kay (Terry) DeRouin of Gladstone.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; sisters; Janet, Susan and Carol Ann and infant brother, Thomas.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 6 from 1-4 p.m. at St. Anne’s Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St. Anne’s Church at 4 p.m. officiated by Rev. Fran DeGroot. A luncheon will follow services in the church hall.

Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery. Veteran services will take place in the spring at the burial.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to U.P. Health System Home and Hospice or Gary Abrahamson Jr. Memory Center. Envelops will be available at the church.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Brunelle family.
