Helen Ryan, 89, of Bark River, passed away late Friday evening, December 13, 2013 at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility.
Helen was born on January 20, 1924 in Escanaba, daughter of Nickolas and Mary (Warshana) Chernick.
Helen married Edward Joseph Ryan on September 8, 1945 at St. Joseph’s Church in Escanaba. Edward preceded her in death on October 16, 2001.
Helen was well known for her sense of humor and kindness to everyone she met. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, canasta, and baking. Helen’s love of the Green Bay Packers was well known, and it was accepted among her family and friends that she was THE number one Packer fan in their acquaintance.
Helen was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Bark River.
Survivors include one son, Kelly (Anne) Ryan of Bark River; three daughters, Judy (Wilson) Davis of Bark River, Linda (Tim) Sovey of Escanaba, Peggie Ryan (Thomas Ross) of Skandia; six grandchildren, Bill (Dana) Ryan of Bark River, Tina (Bart) Buckland of Cornell, Bryan Davis of Colorado Springs, CO, Carrie Davis of Alexandria, Virginia, Ian Ryan-Ross of Skandia and Duncan Ryan-Ross of Ishpeming; great grandchildren, Justin Hemling of Madison, WI, Taylor Ryan of Bark River, and Daniel and Lauren Buckland of Cornell. Helen is also survived by her brother, David (Lynn) Chernick of Escanaba; three sisters, Olga DeGrand, Jean (Art) DeGrand and Barbara Phalen; and sister-in-law, Irene Chernick. Helen is also survived by many nieces and nephews, friends, and her large extended family.
In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by brothers, Nicholas, John, and Wesley Chernick and her sister, Ann Pinozek.
The funeral service will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church on Monday, December 23, 2013 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Darryl Pepin officiating. A luncheon and opportunity to visit and share memories will follow in the church hall.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Escanaba.
