Francis “Fritz” H. Racette, 81, of Escanaba passed away early Thursday morning September 26, 2019 at his home following a lengthy illness.
Fritz was born in L’Anse, MI on July 28, 1938, son of Eugene and Alice (Milligan) Racette. He was raised in L’Anse and graduated from L’Anse High School in 1957.
He served in the United States Army and spent the majority of his time in Germany as a truck driver. While in Germany he had the opportunity to have his picture taken with Elvis Presley who was also serving in Germany.
Fritz worked in his youth at Dutch Anderson’s Gas Station in L’Anse, as a young adult at white Pine Mine, then traveled to Detroit where he worked for a time for Snowden, eventually working for MichCon Gas Company. He eventually was able to transfer with MichCon to Escanaba and retire from there.
His aim in Life was to make people smile. He felt if he could make someone laugh he had accomplished something. He enjoyed trying his hand at farming-even if that wasn’t a great success. He also enjoyed the casino, not just for gambling but also visiting with people there. When he was able, he liked to bow and rifle hunt, fish, bowl and had a great love of cribbage and in his younger years playing poker.
Fritz is survived by his wife Judith (Jarvey) Racette of Escanaba, whom he married in April 1988 in L’Anse; daughter, Nancy S. Racette McCrea; grandchildren, Ian, Riley and Sandra; siblings, Thomas (Anna) Racette of Appleton, WI, Phyllis Dompier of Gaylord, MI, and Sandra Roberts of Mankato, MN; and special friends, Bill and Kathy Gartland.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Robert Eugene Racette; siblings, Mary Faith Manning, Sally Prokop and Patrick Racette; and his unofficially adopted sister, Delores Kneebone.
Visitation will be on Friday, October 4th from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Bark River. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. with Rev. Darryl Pepin officiating. At the conclusion of the mass a meal will be served in the church hall.
Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in L’Anse.
