Eleanor Marie (Swanson) Christianson died on October 18, 2014 at Christian Park Home in Escanaba, Michigan. Her husband Warren Christianson was at her side.
Eleanor was born on April 5, 1919 in Buffalo Center, Iowa to Ben and Ellen Swanson. She graduated from beauty school in Minnesota and went to work in Des Moines, Iowa, where she met Warren. They were married in Omaha, Nebraska on April 2, 1949. In 1956 they moved to St. Ignace, Michigan, where Warren was part of the crew that built the Mackinac Bridge. In 1958 Eleanor opened Eleanor’s Beauty Shop, which she continued to operate on Portage Road until 1992.
They were long-time members of Zion Lutheran Church, where she was a strong soprano in the church choir and a leader in the Dorcas Circle. She also was active with the Order of Eastern Star, which she served as Worthy Matron. Eleanor and Warren spent a portion of each winter in Apache Junction, Arizona, until moving to Gladstone to be near their son David Christianson and daughter-in-law Kathy. They became members of the First Lutheran Church in Gladstone.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her siblings Margaret, Wallace and Henry. She is survived by her husband Warren, her son David and his wife Kathy, daughter Diane Christianson of Byron Center, Michigan, daughter Julie Christianson Stivers and her husband John of Grand Rapids, Michigan, granddaughter Shalimar Wilder Mathess and her husband Adam of Charleston, West Virginia, step-grandchildren Tina Koish, Tim Sovey, Tammy Karkkainen, seven step-great-grandchildren, and one step-great-great grandchild.
The family expresses gratitude to the staff at Christian Park and caring friends from First Lutheran who have helped Warren and Eleanor in their aging years.
A memorial service will be held at Crawford Funeral Home on Friday, October 24th at 5:00 p.m., with an hour for visitation preceding.
