Dr. John R. LeMire

Dr. John R. LeMire, 79, Escanaba, passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at UP Health System – Marquette.

He was born on July 15, 1937 in Escanaba, son of Dr. William and Margaret (Halligan) LeMire. John graduated from Escanaba High School in 1955 and University of Notre Dame in 1959. He began the Stritch School of Medical in Loyola, MD and did his residency for three years in Chicago and one year in Cincinnati.

On August 24, 1963, John married Constance L. “Connie” Oeser in Chicago, IL.

He served in the Army Reserve and Michigan National Guard during the Detroit Riots from 1963 until his honorable discharge as Major in 1973.

Dr. John practiced General Surgery and Occupational Medicine from 1967 until his retirement in 1998. He was the Medical Director and company physician for Harnischfeger, Mead Paper Co., City of Escanaba, Robinson Furniture, Bishop Noa Home, Christian Park Medical Director and OSF Bay de Noc Hospice.

He was a member of St. Joseph and St. Patrick Church. He was a member of the Escanaba Country Club, Delta County Chamber of Commerce, Elks Lodge 354, Delta County Medical Society, and past president of the Optimist Club.

Dr. John loved his family and his church. He was a fan of the Green Bay Packers and enjoyed golfing, reading and traveling.

Among survivors include his wife, Connie of Escanaba; children, John R. LeMire II (Patti) of Escanaba, Jeanne (Mark) Stevenson of Traverse City, MI, Scott (Tracy) LeMire of Appleton, WI, and Patti Sue (Todd) Guerne of Escanaba; grandchildren, John III, Nick, Christopher, Hunter, Logan, Josie, Justin, Jennifer, Jessica, Jordan, Jake, Lindsey, Avery, Taylor, and Jason; two brothers, Dr. William A. (Nancy) LeMire III of Escanaba and Timothy LeMire of Lombard, IL; and sister, Mary LeMire of Escanaba.

A visitation will be on Friday, August 5th from noon to 4:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. The Delta County Veterans Council and the U.P. Military Honor Guard Team will have military rites at 1 p.m. The funeral mass will follow at 5p.m. at St. Joseph and St. Patrick Church with Rev. Eric Olson officiating. A meal will follow at the Escanaba Elks Lodge.

Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family. A memorial in Dr. John’s name will be established at a later date.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the LeMire family.
