Doris A. (“Chiede”) Sabor, age 93, passed away peacefully, and without fanfare, as was her way, on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay, with family at her side.
She was born on January 30, 1925 in Osier, MI, daughter of Edward and Irene (Des Jardin) Botrow. Doris was raised in Osier until moving to Escanaba where she attended the Barr School. At a young age, like many of her generation, Doris knew loss, hard work, and lack of educational opportunities. But, she had a heart full of compassion and wisdom that surpassed any diploma. She never let life’s sorrows or setbacks steal her joy and smile.
Doris married George C. Nielsen on May 11, 1946 and he preceded her in death four days after their 11th anniversary in 1957. She later married Joseph B. Sabor at St. Thomas Church in Escanaba on January 16, 1960 and they had three daughters. Joe passed away from leukemia after ten years of marriage in October 1970.
Over the years, Doris was employed in retail stores, including, Niesner’s 5 & 10, Red Owl, The Fair Store and Viau’s Market. But it was having children and grandchildren that Mom cherished and considered her greatest blessing. And, oh how she was loved in return!
Raising three young daughters on her own strengthened her commitment to her family. She not only served her own family, she was loyal of serving others. She always sought out little chores or errands that needed to be done to help those around her. Anything she borrowed was returned either mended, washed and always in better condition than you had loaned it.
Mom was the person who was most comfortable behind the scenes, never drawing attention to herself. She thought of others as more important. The “little” things she did for others may not have been noticed initially, but through the years these random acts of kindness made a difference in so many lives.
Doris was a faithful, devoted member of the Church of Christ, where she could usually be found in the kitchen, doing the dishes after a potluck or organizing a drawer or two. She touched lives with her simple way and made you want to be a kinder, more generous person. No greater legacy can one leave their family.
Among survivors include her three daughters, Jody (Marc) Sundquist of Perronville, Jean (Michael) Bugay of Escanaba and Mary Beth (Richard) Williams of Escanaba; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husbands; she was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Irene Botrow; step father, Edward Frappier; three sisters, Genevieve Powers, Vivian Lewis, twin sister Dora Arrowood; and special cousin, Edna Kern.
A celebration of the life of Doris will be held on Friday, January 18th, 2019 at the Church of Christ in Escanaba, Michigan. Visitation is scheduled from 2-5 p.m., with Memorial Service and luncheon to follow.
