Donald “Peno” Rae, 91, of Escanaba, passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2020 at Christian Park Health Care Center.

He was born on May 27, 1928 in Escanaba, son of James and Mary (Sorby) Rae.

On July 5, 1951, Peno married Mary Benson and together they had eight children.  At a young age, in 1970 she preceded him in death.  He later married Sally Cass in 1976 at St. Anthony’s Church.

He worked as the maintenance manager for Lakestate Industries for many years and then was employed as a machinist at Escan until his retirement in 1986.

Peno loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and working on old cars.

Among survivors include his wife, Sally of Escanaba; children, Donald (Debbie) Rae of Oshkosh, WI, David (Judie) Rae of Trinidad, CO, Mary (Pat) Cass of Escanaba, Jim Rae of Escanaba, Becki (Mike) Pouliot of Gladstone and Kitty (Todd) Gartland of Escanaba; stepchildren, Jim (Jenny) Cass of Kingman, AZ, Debbie (Randy) Heider of Escanaba and Charlie Cass of Green Bay, WI; 44 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and first wife, Mary; Peno was preceded in death by his daughter, Dawn Taylor; son, Bobby Rae; grandson, Patrick Cass, Jr.; brothers, Grant, James, and Robbert “Buzzy” Rae; and sisters, Dorthey Nelson, Alice LaBay, Mary Jane Liberty, Joanne Priester and Shirley Anderson.

A service for relatives and friends will be announced at a later date.
