Donald F. Strahl, 87, of Wilson, passed away early Thursday morning, October 5, 2017 at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba.
Don was born on the family farm in Harris Twp. on May 1, 1930, son of Howard and Stella (Arkens) Strahl and attended the local school.
On October 30, 1948, Don married Jackie Shepard in Bark River. She preceded him in death on January 11, 1997.
Don worked for Harnischfeger, Snowden Inc, hauled cattle with his son, Mike and was an independent logger until he became self- employed with Strahl Horse Drawn Sleigh and Wagon Service. He bought and sold horses. He loved working with horses and proudly started a wagon train to benefit Bay Cliff which took place for four years.
On December 31, 2001, Don married Sandra Lee Strand in Escanaba.
Don was an avid Green Bay Packer and Detroit Tiger fan. He previously had played and was manager for the underhand fast pitch 47 Tavern team.
He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church and Horse Farming Today Club. He was the superintendent of Menominee County Fair and 19 years for the U.P. State Fair Draft Horses.
In addition to his wife, Sandra, he is survived by his children; Susan Strahl, John (Brenda) Strahl, Donald (Janet) Strahl, Peggy (David Porath) Strahl, Mike (Jocelyn Monroe) Strahl and Patrick (Jill) Strahl; step daughter, Donna (Kevin) Hare; daughter in law, Barbara; 14 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Richard “Ricky”; son in law, Robert Serwe; siblings, Dale, Leonard, Lloyd, Norbert, Wayne “Chum” Strahl and Lorraine Kirschner.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 13th from 2 – 4:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Bark River. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 5 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church with Rev. Darryl Pepin officiating. Burial will immediately follow in the Bark River Cemetery where he will be laid to rest next to his first wife, Jackie. A meal will follow in the church hall.
