Donald C. Cousineau, 95, of Escanaba, passed away early Wednesday morning September 6, 2017 at St. Francis Hospital.

Don was born September 4, 1922 in Alpena, MI, son of Wilfred and Irene (Dougherty) Cousineau. He was raised in Alpena and moved to Escanaba in 1960.

On June 10, 1950 he married Thelma Talaski at St. Mary’s Church in Alpena. She preceded him in death on November 18, 2011.

On February 23, 1943, Don joined the Army. He fought in Rhineland, Central Europe and Northern France. He received a World War II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with three battle stars along with a Good Conduct Ribbon and American Theater Ribbon. He served 144 consecutive days in combat. He was honorably discharged November 14, 1945.

Don worked for Beatrice Foods for many years as a salesman before becoming the owner of Jim’s Dari Kreme from 1968 to 1980.

He loved to watch and cheer on the Detroit Tigers and Lions.

Don was a member of St. Thomas Church where he was a Eucharist minister and a former member of the Knights of Columbus.

Among survivors are his children; Donald (Jayne Mackwoiak) of Gladstone, Paul Cousineau of Escanaba and Peter (Michelle) Cousineau of Greenville, WI; grandchildren, Stacey Cousineau, Aimee Plutchack, Jessica Cousineau, Heather Kaufmann, Nadine Cousineau, Kevin Smith, Kristen Cambensy; nine great grandchildren and sister, Fidelis Bedard.

In addition to his parents and wife, Thelma, he was preceded in death by children Carlene and Mark Cousineau and brother’s Wilfred and Edward.
Visitation will be held Friday, September 8th from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 5:00 p.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church with Rev. Rick Courier officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.

Burial and military honors will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Cousineau family.
