Derek James Sagataw “Minodwahbeh” “Spirit Eyes”, 25, Hannahville, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at his home.
He was born in Escanaba on July 31, 1990, son of William and Heather (Teeple) Sagataw.
Derek graduated from Nah Tah Wahsh Indian School in 2009. He loved his sons with all his heart and they meant the world to him.
He loved to play guitar, write his own music, and teach his son, Jayden, how to play. Derek also enjoyed creating tattoos.
He held three National Native American Boxing Belts.
Derek is survived by his three sons, Jayden, Kalven, and Lennon Sagataw, of Hannahville; fiancée, Nikki Williams of Hannahville; parents, Willy and Heather Sagataw of Hannahville; siblings, Alyssa (Jeremy) Sagataw, Gage Sagataw, Aubree Sagataw, and Daven Sagataw all of Hannahville; grandparents, Audrey and Ernesto Gamez and David and Charlene Teeple all of Hannahville; great grandparents, Charlotte Megenuph of Hannahville and Theresa Teeple of Bay Mills, MI; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his paternal great grandparents, Francis “Faron” and Cheryl “Porky” Sagataw; cousins, Paheesh and Chebabnasa Shawano, and David Tovar all of Hannahville.
Visitation will begin on Sunday, December 13, 2015 after 4 p.m. at the Hannahville Community Center. Services will begin at the Community Center at 10 a.m. on Monday morning, December 14.
Burial will be in the Hannahville Cemetery.
The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Sagataw family.
