Clarence E. “Sonny” Gill, 80, N14507 Hannahville B-1 Road, Wilson, passed away at his home early Friday morning, July 31, 2015.
He was born February 20, 1935 in Nahma, son of Clarence E. and Josephine (Dayson) Gill Sr.
He served in the Army from 1953 until 1956 during the Korean Conflict, honorably discharged as a Sergeant.
In 1958, Sonny married Rose Sagataw in Spalding and they raised their family in Appleton, WI.
He worked as a tree trimmer and mechanic before joining Appleton Structural Steel Company as a maintenance mechanic, retiring in 1993.
After moving back to Hannahville, he was adopted by the tribe and started working at the casino, first in security, then resigned after being elected to the Gaming Commission and was then selected as commissioner. He held that position until 2012. He was a member of American legion Post 116 as ATJ. He and Rose travelled the country after retirement enjoying visits with family.
Clarence is survived by sons, Keith (David) of Escanaba and Kevin of Hannahville; daughter, Shannon (Robin) of Hannahville; five grandchildren, Cassie, Tatiana, Cody, Zach, and Alyssa; great granddaughter, Tegan; sister, Katherine (Tom) of Bessemer, AL; brother, Henry (Martha) of Sun City, CA; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Rose Gill in April 2015; his parents; brothers, Harry, Jesse, and Tom Williams; and sisters, Charlotte Sagataw and Rose Wandahsega.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 4th from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Bark River. The Hannahville American Legion Post 116 will have military rites at 3 p.m.
Burial will follow services in the Bark River Cemetery.
