Clara Marie Barra

Clara Marie Barra, 91, of Perronville, passed away on Friday, January 10, 2014 at Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba.

She was born on January 17, 1922 in Perrvonille, MI, daughter of Frank and Frances (Wilengowski) Mankiewicz. Clara graduated from Harris High School in 1940 and graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Green Bay in 1943.

Clara served in the Army from June 6, 1945 until her honorable discharge on January 10, 1947. She served in Panama and on the hospital ship, “Shamrock”, during WWII. She was awarded the American Theatre ribbon World War II Victory Medal.

She worked at St. Francis Hospital as a night supervisor and later as a company nurse at Harnischfeger and MEAD

Clara was a member of the Bark River American Legion and served as a volunteer with the American Red Cross. As a lifelong member of St. Michael’s Parish she was involved in the Altar Society and Rosary Society, and was presently a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton parish.

She enjoyed crafts (especially creating wreaths) and crocheting (making an afghan for each of her family members) while enjoying her role as the “emergency nurse” for her neighbors.

Among her survivors are daughters, Dianne Forti of Tyngsboro, MA, Pat Barra of Perronville, Gina (Doug) Younkle of Green Bay, WI; 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; sister, Helen Polishak of Gladstone; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry; three sons, Gary, Daniel, and Alan; and daughter, Marilyn Day.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 15th from 10 – 11:30 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Bark River. The Rheaume-Knauf American Legion Post 438 of Bark River will have military services at 10:30 a.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Emmett Norden officiating. Lunch will be served in the church hall.

Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Perronville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Clara’s name to the Bishop Noa Home to help create a family room for Hospice residents.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the family.
