Charlene ‘Char’ M. Curran

Charlene M. “Char” Curran, 87, of Escanaba, passed away Sunday, December 8, 2019 at Pinecrest Medical Facility in Powers.

Char was born in Manistique, MI, on October 17, 1932, daughter of Henry and Stella (Gauthier) Gardner. She was raised in Manistique and graduated from Manistique High School.

On February 19, 1955 Char married Larry Curran in Manistique. Together they celebrated 64 years of marriage and raised 4 children.

Char worked for her parents at the Gardner hotel and restaurant for years before becoming a secretary for Kenosha-American Motor Co. For 10 years she was an aide at the ISD in Escanaba. The job she enjoyed most was being a homemaker. She was known far and wide for her delicious rolls and rye bread.

She enjoyed many summers camping with family and friends and upon retirement spent 13 years wintering in Arizona.

She was a member of St. Joseph and St. Patrick Parish where she was active in organizing and calling on people for funeral choir. She was involved in PTO at school for many years while her children were in school and assisted in cooking hot meals at St Joseph, St Patrick and Holy Name Schools.

Among survivors are her husband, Larry; children, Colleen Curran of Lansing, MI, Kelly (Brian) Wright of Shelby, MI, Kevin Curran of Perkins and Shawn (Linda) Curran of Appleton, WI; grandchildren, Shannon Curran, Sean (Tamara) Curran, Shaylee Curran, Josh (Sarah) Wright, Kelsey Wright, Hannah Wright, Chris (Morgan) Curran and Jenny (Nicholas) Martzahl; great grandchildren, Keagan (Sasha) Curran, Andi Martzahl and Alex Martzahl; sister in law, Patricia Hough; and cousin, Paul Gauthier.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Laurie Ann Curran; sister in law, Kay Jackson, brothers in law, Joe Jackson and Lauritz Hough.

Visitation will be held on Friday, December 13, 2019 from 2 – 4:30 pm at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 South 13th Street, Escanaba. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 5 pm at St. Joseph and St. Patrick Church with Rev. Eric Olson officiating. A lunch will follow in the church hall.

Burial will take place in the spring in Fairview Cemetery in Manistique.

    Grandma Curran as we lovingly called her over the years, is free! No more pain, no more struggles. She was the best! So sweet and kind. We will cherish the times the kids visited with her as another Grandma. Prayers for comfort and the peace that is beyond our understanding. Love and hugs!

  8. I was heartbroken to hear of Chars passing. I have so many wonderful memories growing up with The Curran’s and felt like part of the family. Larry, Kevin, Shawn, Colleen and Kelly my thoughts and prayers are with you all. I I wish more then anything I could be there but will be with you in spirit.

  9. Colleen and the entire Curran family, My heart and prayers go out to each of you. I remember Mrs. Curran as a gentle, happy faith filled Mom! Colleen, having just lost my dad, I am very sad for all of you. We have our memories and faith. We know that it is best that our loved ones don’t suffer in this life. It doesnt make it any easier. I am sure your hearts, are filled with sadness, but your memories will be a blessing. May God hold you all tightly.

    You, Char and your family are a part of the Powell family memories. From the days in Minnesota to living next door to you in Escanaba, there are wonderful stories to tell. We will miss Char very much but I’m sure that Lydia and Dick are happy to have her by their side to watch over those of us who continue on. I know that you will miss her very much but the memories of the love and friendship will be prominent in our minds and hearts especially during this Christmas season. Take comfort that she is with God and looking over all of us. Our love and thoughts are with you all.

  12. She always called me KK and treated me as one of her own. I have fond memories our time on 11th street and will never forget them. She will live on in our hearts. I wish everyone the best.
