Bernadette M. “Bunny” Arkens, 90, passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers with her husband and family members at her side. Harvey J. Arkens, 91, joined his wife in heaven on Sunday morning, April 17, 2016 at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility.
Bernadette was born on July 4, 1925 in New Lisbon, WI, daughter of Geroge I. and Golden S. (Slowey) Barrett. She attended school in New Lisbon and continued her education at Northern Michigan University earning her bachelor and master’s degree in education. Bunny was a teacher in Wisconsin, Powers and then Bark River Schools. Following the completion of her master’s degree she started a special education reading program at Bark River Schools.
Harvey was born on May 28, 1924 in Wilson on the family farm, son of William and Pauline (Miller) Arkens. He attended school in Wilson and later served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Harvey enlisted on January 25, 1944 and served during the Battle of the Bulge and was honorably discharged on November 6, 1945. He was a recipient of the WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Purple Heart Medal. Harvey participated in the Honor Flight in 2012. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Harvey worked on the family farm and at Harnischfeger Corporation until their closure.
On July 7, 1946, Harvey Arkens married Bernadette Arkens in Camp Douglas, WI. They were blessed with nearly 70 years of marriage.
Bunny enjoyed crocheting, and her involvement with the Bark River Legion Auxiliary and helping with the Special Olympics. She was also a member on the MEA Board for many years.
Harvey was a history and politic buff, always enjoying a good political debate. He loved hunting and farming. He was a very proud member of the Bark River American Legion Rheaume-Knauf Post 438.
Harvey and Bunny were members of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.
Among survivors include two daughters, Katherine (Frederick) Kimpel of Palmer, AK and Debra (Brian) Droscha of Charlotte, MI; son in law, Robert Haara of Skandia, MI; eight grandchildren, George, Raymond (Leah) and Roberta Haara, Tanya (Richard) Sorenson, Harvey Kimpel, Jason, Sarah and Rebekah Davenport; and four great grandchildren. Harvey is also survived by two brothers, George Arkens of Menominee and Robert Arkens of Escanaba.
They were preceded in death by their parents; daughter, Sheila Haara in 2011; and Harvey’s brothers, Joe and Richard; sister, Mary; and Bunny’s brother, Edgar Barrett.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church beginning at 10 a.m. The Bark River American Legion Rheaume-Knauf Post 438 military rites will be at 11:30 a.m. for Harvey and then the Bark River Legion Auxiliary will have their memorial service for Bunny. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at noon with Rev. Darryl Pepin officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.
Entombment will be in the Gardens of Rest Mausoleum.
