Died April 2nd, 2019

Arthur A. “Art” Schaffer, 79, of Bark River, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at Cedar Hill Assisted Living.

He was born on December 21, 1939 in Milwaukee, son of Erwin A. and Loretta A. (Buth) Schaffer.  Art was raised in Milwaukee and graduated from Custer High School in 1957.  He attended one year of college in Madison but quickly realized that his passion wasn’t for design but rather building.  He then completed trade school and went on to work as a Steamfitter in various factories and breweries in Milwaukee.

On May 8, 1965, Art married Patricia E. “Pat” LaFleur in Milwaukee and started their family.

In 1969, they moved to Bark River where Art continued his work in the construction industry.  He evolved from piping and instrumentation positions to general manager for several different construction companies and ultimately starting his own company, Schaffer Mechanical. He had a passion for new technologies and was an early adapter of using computers in the construction industry.

Art loved reading and the outdoors, enjoying fishing, hunting, and going to camp. Art and Pat enjoyed four years wintering in Lake Havasu, AZ and would spend their summers camping at Rivers Bend in Iron Mountain.

He took on many roles for community boards and organizations including the Trade and Labor Board, Past President of the Bark River Harris School Board, Bark River Twp. Trustee, King Lion for the Bark River Lion’s Club, member of the NRA, and the Knights of Columbus 4thDegree.

Art was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church and had served on the parish council and had been a Eucharistic Minister.

He is survived by his wife, Pat of Bark River; three daughters, Brenda (Bill) Lippens of Bark River, Lori (Mark) Johnson of Harris and Tricia (Chad) Cmejla of Glenwood City, WI; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Sarah Lippens, Nick (Laura) and Emily Johnson, and Sister Marie Madeleine, Jacob, Cole, Caroline, Gianna, Mary, Caitlin, Lillian, Joseph, Abigail and Dominic Cmejla; two sisters, Doris (Curt Otto) Schaffer of Milwaukee and Barbara (Gene) Bunge; two sisters in law, Suda Schaffer of West Bend, WI and Barbara Schaffer of Sun City West, AZ; several nieces and nephews; and his faithful companion Stubby, his cat.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Erwin and Dennis Schaffer.

Visitation will be on Thursday, April 4th from 2 – 4:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Chapel, 1236 Old Hwy 2 & 41, Bark River.  The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 5 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church with Rev. Darryl Pepin officiating.  A meal will immediately follow in the church hall.

I have such wonderful memories of Art and all of you during my too brief a time as your pastor. As we celebrate the Paschal Mystery this Holy Week and Easter, my prayer is that Art will share fully in the new life won for us by Jesus. May he now be with his God forever. He and Joyce are probably renewing their friendship as they wait for us to one day join them! You are all in my prayers. May he rest in eternal peace!
