Alex F. “Junior” Malmstead, Jr. 75, of Hyde, passed away early Wednesday morning, September 13, 2017 at Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba.

Alex was born May 31, 1942, in Escanaba, son of Alex and Ida Butterfield Malmstead. He was raised in the Escanaba and Bark River area and graduated from Escanaba High School in 1961.

On April 25, 1964, Alex married Katherine Sabourin at Sacred Heart Church in Schaffer. She preceded him in death on November 3, 2016.

Alex lost his vision at a young age and struggled with many health issues due to his diabetes. Despite these challenges, he was still able to perform many woodworking skills and work in their family business, Lane Auto Sales for many years. He loved cars, fishing, and playing cards. His grandchildren were the light of his world.

He was a member of St. Anne’s Church, the American Diabetes Association and American Federation of the Blind.

Alex is survived by his children; Mark (Gina) Malmstead of Oxford, MI, Michael (Marybrigh) Malmstead of Green bay, WI, Mary (Scott) Fritz and Rob (Crista) Malmstead all of Escanaba; grandchildren Kamille, Abigail, Megan, Matthew, Mollie, Brendan, Justin, Kevin, Anna, Katie and Valerie; siblings, Larry Malmstead of Gladstone, Sharon (Doug) Hawes of Escanaba, Bruce Malmstead of California, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Alex was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine.

Visitation will be Friday, September 15th at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba from 5-7 p.m. Parish prayer’s will follow at 7. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday at 9 a.m. at St. Anne’s Church with Rev. Fran DeGroot officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall. Burial will take place at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Schaffer.

Memorials may be directed to Bishop Noa Home in Alex’s memory.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Malmstead family.

  2. To my Malmstead friends,
    Just want you to know how very sorry we are to hear of your loss.I personally have vivid memories of your Mother and Father walking together throughout the town. The site of them together always made me realize what “true love” really looked like. I personally miss those sightings and reminders of true love.
    I apologise for not being able to be there at this time for I am working in LA.

  3. Please accept our deepest condolences on your great loss of your dad. I knew your mom since Jr Hi & we kept in touch all those years. It’s so sad to have lost both your parents. Your mom would always send a Christmas card & was very proud of her family. Our thoughts & prayers are with you.
