Alice Louise Montroy of Petoskey, MI, passed away January 31st, 2015, due to complications of Alzheimer disease. Alice was 85 years old. She was born to Irving and Gertrude Phelps in Fitchburg, MA, on March 14, 1929. She was raised with 2 sisters, Germond and Posey, who preceded her in death. She married Roy A. Montroy Sr. on October 26, 1951. Together they had 5 children: Roy (Caryl) Montroy of Chicago, IL; Hildie (Terry) Saunders of Escanaba, MI; Marilyn (Jim) Cusenza of Petoskey, MI; Timothy (Laurie) Montroy of Aburn Hills, MI; and Tom Montroy of Petoskey, MI.
Alice served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. She met her husband, Roy, while working at the Pentagon and married while both were still enlisted.
In 2008 she diligently cared for her husband who also died of Alzheimer complications. She was preceded in death by 2 grandchildren Bill Cusenza, son of Marilyn and Jim Cusenza, in 2009; and Lindsey Montroy, daughter of Timothy and Laurie Montroy, in 2013.
Alice is survived by nine grandchildren. Arwyn and Alinea Montroy, Chicago, IL, Craig (Carrie) Saunders, Petoskey, MI, Sarah (Brian) Hughes, Escanaba, MI, Terry (Ellysha) Saunders, Manhattan, KS, Diane Cusenza, Traverse City, MI, and Justin, Katrina, and Tammy Montroy of Auburn Hills, MI. She also has 8 great-grandchildren, Ava and Allison Saunders, Emma, Carson and Owen Hughes, and Brady, Kaelynn and Kaleb Saunders.
Our Alice is remembered as a selfless, loving, Christian woman who always put others before herself. We all felt blessed to be raised and loved by such a gentle, compassionate woman. She enjoyed time with her family, walking and reading. Alice believed in Jesus and in her last years she attended Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Petoskey. She was living at American House Assisted Living in Petoskey, where she received exceptional care and genuine love.
Visitation will be held at Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba, on Wednesday, Feb. 4th, from 5 pm – 7 pm. A private funeral service will take place on Thursday, Feb 5th, officiated by her son in law, Deacon Terry Saunders. Alice will be buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Escanaba, MI.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer Association or the Charity of one’s choice.
