Boyd D. “Denny” Cummings, 81, 626 S. 12th St., Escanaba, passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2014 at his home.

He was born on April 3, 1933 in Chicago, IL, son of Myrtle Hagland Olson. Boyd was raised in Schaffer and Escanaba and graduated from Escanaba High School. He attended Bay de Noc Community College, Northern Michigan University, University of Michigan, University of Maryland and Texas A & M, earning a Masters Degree of Science.

Boyd served 22 years in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1972,. He served in Vietnam and Korea and was stationed in Iceland and Japan, retiring as Master Sergeant.

When he returned home after serving in Korea he met the love of his life, Mildred Levesque in the Upper Peninsula. In October of 1954, they married and in the years to follow they had and raised seven children all over the world.

Following his honorable discharge out of the Air Force, Boyd and his family returned to Delta County where he was employed as an automotive mechanic with Town and Country Motors. He was also a teacher with Wisconsin Public Schools and at Northern Michigan University.

Boyd was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting, camping, going to the casino and he loved when his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren would stop over to visit.

Among survivors include his wife, Mildred of Escanaba; seven children, Deborah (Dan) Curran of Escanaba, Colleen (Gregg) Nelson of Winneconne, WI, Barb (Bob) Larson of Bark River, Julie Cummings of Conifer, CO, Mike (Corine) Cummings of Escanaba, Kevin (Jan) Cummings of Escanaba and Steve Cummings of Escanaba; 16 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren; sisters, Gay (Sam) Mills, LuAnn Houle, Lolly (Tom) Boucher; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother; great grandson, Alexander Curran; brother, Roger Cummings; sister, Nancy Tebear and brothers in law, Roger Houle, Bobbie and Louis Levesque.

Visitation will be on Friday, April 11th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. The Delta County Veterans Council will have military rites at 2 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. at the Escanaba Free Lutheran Church with his son, Pastor Mike Cummings officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.

Burial will take place in the spring in the Bark River Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family. A memorial flag pole will be purchased in honor of Boyd’s service to his country and a donation will be made to the Escanaba Free Lutheran Church.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Cummings family.
