Donald W. “Don” Savage, 88, of Escanaba, passed away on Sunday evening, August 6, 2017 at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility.

He was born on November 13, 1928 in Escanaba, son of William and Rose (LaVigne) Savage.

Don served in the Army from 1945 until his honorable discharge on July 8, 1947. He served during WWII and was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal and World War II Victory Medal.

Don had the honor of being a participant on an Honor Flight with his daughter as his guardian.

On October 30, 1948, Donald married Jewel Sundelius in Schaffer.

Orginally from Schaffer and Escanaba, Don and Jewel yearned to return “home” and in 1972, relocated to Schaffer where they combined their love of camping with a new business venture by opening the Ten Mile Creek campground. Retirement took them to Escanaba, returning Jewel to her roots in “North Town”.

Don and Jewel lived in the Chicago area for many years. They raised their children in Bridgeview, IL while Don worked for Sciaky Bros. After returning to Delta County, Don was employed with Harnischfeger until his retirement. During his retirement years, he enjoyed driving for the Data Bus and Bay Pines.

Don enjoyed doing yard work, small engine repair, bicycling and spending time outdoors with his family. What he enjoyed most is a cup of his favorite coffee with friends at McDonalds, reminiscing and sharing a joke or two.

Among survivors include his wife, Jewel of Escanaba; children, Ronald (Joanne Villanueva) Savage of Hermansville, Dennis Savage of Phoenix, AZ, Donna (John) Hitzker of Addison, IL, Darlene (Jeff) Derocher of Escanaba and Diana (Gerald) Derocher of Bark River; 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; six brothers and sisters, Jerry (Joan), Bradley (Judy), Lloyd, Kenneth, Marilyn (Mark) Lee and Joanne (Norman) Chenier; brother in law, Geno Gonsowski; numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Robert, Joyce, Elaine, Janice, Nancy and Diana.

The family will greet friends and relatives from 2 – 4 p.m. on Thursday, August 17th at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. The visitation will conclude with the Bark River Legion military rites at 4 p.m. A luncheon will follow the service in the funeral home lounge.

Memorials may be directed to Don’s family.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Savage family.
