Virgil L. Oswald went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 29, 2017, surrounded by the loving support of his family. Virgil was born on September 10, 1937 in Rochester, Michigan. The son of the late Frederick and Isabelle (Gwisdella) Oswald. Virgil attended St. Lawrence and graduated from Rochester High in 1955.

Virgil was drafted and served two years in the Army. Virgil met Rebecca DeLong in 1958 and they married on May 13, 1961 at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Pontiac, Michigan and were lifetime partners for 57 years. They moved to Bark River in 1969, where Virgil worked at the Paper Mill as a pipefitter and later a machinist. He retired after 27 years.

Virgil was a hobby farmer, loved to fly his ultralight and 4 seater planes, watch NASCAR, and was an avid and faithful Detroit Lions fan and classic car enthusiast. Virgil coached little league and snowshoeing, was active in his Catholic church, served in the Knights of Columbus, and volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul. He enjoyed traveling with his friends and went on a missionary adventure to Honduras.
Virgil was a devout Catholic, attending daily mass via EWTN and prayed the rosary twice a day for his surviving nine children, 28 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Frederick (Cindi) Shedd, grandchildren Cassie and Becca; Virginia (Bob) Rosenfeldt, grandchild Dylan; Ann (Mike) Sherzer, grandchildren, Allison (spouse Evan and great grandchildren Mikey, Maddie, Lincoln and Dominic), Andrea and Elizabeth; Edward (Christine Lavelle), grandchildren, Brian (spouse Michelle and great grandchildren Annelise and Lucas) Elise and Taylor; Claire (John) Schultz, grandchild, Samantha; Theodore (Carolyn Olson), grandchildren Ellyn, Eli, Ezekiel, Eden, Esther, Emmanuel and Ethan; Ned (Michelle Nedeau), grandchildren Iris, Deve, Lila, Ivy, Azalea; Jed (Ruth Eichhorn), grandchildren Jett and Ruby; Stephanie (Will) Smoot, grandchildren Charlie, Ava, Aria and Maggie May.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Bernie Oswald.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Bark River on Tuesday, May 2nd at 11 a.m. A luncheon will follow the service in the church hall.

Burial will take place in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Conference, c/o St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Bark River.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Oswald family.
