John Thomas Sankovitch, 91, of 2916 3rd Ave S. Apt. 11, Escanaba, passed peacefully Saturday, Oct 22, 2016, at Bishop Noa Home surrounded by family and friends, reciting his beloved Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy with the sound of his favorite music including “Surely.” John was the eighth of nine children born to Michael and Frances Sankovitch on June 3, 1925, in Central City, PA. He was preceded in death by his son Michael Joseph (St. Louis, MO), his parents and all eight siblings: Michael (Central City, PA), Mary (Middletown, NY), Anna (Pittsburgh, PA), Joseph (Johnstown, PA), Emily (Middletown, NY), Helen (Cleveland, OH), Frank (Orlando, FL) and Robert (Central City, PA).

John is survived by his wife RoseMary and five of their six married children: Kristine (Tom) Anderson, Champaign, IL; Thomas (Barb), Green Bay, WI; Mark (Mary Ellen), York, PA; John Paul (Jill), Ames, IA; Jim (Linda), Bark River and Mary (Michael’s wife), Westminster, MD.

John cheered the Packers of course; he worked, golfed, and read with passion. But his life was devoted to his family, his heart and soul deeply rooted Catholic faith which he lived and preached daily. He prayed for, advised, loved his 17 grandchildren: Maddie, James; Kagan, Khara, Joshua, Jason; Helene, Stuart; Michael John, Lauren; Stephanie, Matthew; Lizzie, Steven, Kaiti, Scott & Anna Lisa. And he experienced the joy of holding each of his 15 great grandchildren. He has three more on the way. Family, faith mattered to John.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, a secular Franciscan, active member of Apostolate of Our Lady of Fatima/Blue Army, Elks and the Escanaba Country Club.

John was proud of his service in the US Navy as a Quartermaster Second Class from 1943-46. He served in the Pacific Theater on the LCT 695 and LCT 674, earning the Pacific Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and the Victory Medal.

His service awarded him the GI Bill, fulfilling his dream to earn a college degree. After two years at University of Pittsburg, he transferred to Marquette University in Milwaukee where he met his bride, RoseMary and earned his “double E,” his electrical engineering degree.

John worked for Milwaukee Gas Light Company, Marathon Paper Company as an Engineer, and 30 years with P & H as Division Replacement Parts Manager.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. Recitation of the Rosary by Blue Army and Secular Franciscans at 3:45 pm, parish prayers at 6 p.m. and Rosary by Knights of Columbus at 7 p.m. John’s Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, St. Joseph & St. Patrick Parish with Rev Eric Olson officiating. The Delta County Veteran Council will have military rites in addition to the graveside service at 2 p.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made in memory of John Sankovitch to Our Lady of Fatima Blue Army Rosary Radio Hour or Holy Name Catholic Grade School.
