Thomas D. “Tom” Gaastra, 81, Gladstone, passed away on Friday, September 2, 2016 at Northwoods Place in Escanaba.

Tom was born on April 23, 1935 in Grand Rapids, son of Jan Tabe and Kathryn (VanderWiere) Gaastra. He graduated from High School in Grand Rapids and later earned a bachelor degree from Michigan State University.

Tom served in the U.S. Marines from 1958 until his honorable discharge in 1964.

On October 18, 1958, Tom married Judith “Judy” Peterson in Grand Rapids. She preceded him in death in 1992.

Tom and Judy raised their family in Warren, MI and he was employed as a corporate executive for Chrysler before his retirement in 1999.

In 2005, Tom moved to Gladstone to enjoy his love of the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and restoring jeeps.

Among survivors include his two daughters, Sandra (Kevin) Whitney of Newmarket, New Hamphire and Kristi (John) Haupt of Rochester Hills, MI; two grandchildren, Courtney and Alexa Haupt; and brother, Dale Gaastra.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Judy.

Tom’s family will greet family and friends from 1 – 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 4th at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. The Delta County Veterans Council will have military rites at 3 p.m.

Burial will take place at White Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Troy, MI.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Gaastra family.
