Raymond E. Champion, 89, formerly of Menominee, currently residing in Bark River, passed away peacefully with his family at his side at Dayton, Ohio Veteranís Hospice Center on February 15, 2016.

The son of the late Emil and Louise Champion. Ray was born June 20, 1926 in Marinette, WI. He graduated from Marinette High School in 1944.

Ray was a proud WWII veteran, drafted into the U.S. Navy and served from October 1944 until July 1946 aboard the USS LSM (r) 514.

Upon his return to Marinette he embarked on a career as a self-employed commercial fisherman.

He was also employed for many years as a supervisor for Fish, Net and Twine (FNT) Industry in Menominee. He retired in 1988 from FNT and continued to work part time as a commercial fisherman. His talent for stringing fish nets was well known in the community.

After retirement he and his wife moved to the family farm in Bark River.

Ray was a current member of the Wilson Seventh Day Adventist Church.

He was a private, religious, deeply caring, and hardworking individual. He was a nature lover, avid outdoorsman, and he especially enjoyed gardening. During retirement he and his wife would spend winters in Florida and in Dayton, OH with their daughter and son-in-law.

He will be sadly missed by his family and is survived by his wife of 67 years, Georgia; daughters, Donna (Bob) Duffy of Williamsburg, VA and Linda (Mark) Hosford of Dayton, OH; sons, James (Mary) Champion of Menominee and Tom (Carolina) Champion of Wilson; sister, Sandy (Ralph) Peterson; brother, LeRoy Champion; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helen; and brother, James.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at 11 a.m. (Eastern) at the Wilson Seventh Day Adventist Church with a meal to follow at the Wilson Seventh Day Adventist Academy.

Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in the Bark River Cemetery.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Champion family.
