Edsel P. “Ed” Bedard, 89, Escanaba, passed away on Monday, June 6, 2016 at OSF St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba.

He was born in Gladstone on March 7, 1927, son of the late George and Aurora (LaPointe) Bedard.

Ed graduated from Channing High School in 1944. He continued his education at Cloverland Business College.

He served in the United States Navy from April 19, 1945 until he was honorably discharged on July 12, 1946.

On September 11, 1948, Ed married the former Lorraine LaFave at St. Patrick’s Church in Escanaba.

Ed was employed by the Escanaba Fire Department as a Captain, and when the departments merged in 1975 he became a Lieutenant for Escanaba Public Safety. He retired as a Deputy Director of Escanaba Public Safety in 1987.

He was a member of St. Joseph and St. Patrick’s Church. He was a 3rd and 4th degree Knights of Columbus and a member of the Escanaba Elks Lodge 354.

Ed enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to camp, and spending time on his tree farm. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his children, Bonnie (Jim) Lippens of Escanaba, Jack (Cindy) Bedard of Gladstone, Gary (Pat) Bedard of Escanaba, Judy Bedard of Rhinelander, WI, and Jeri (Rich) Gagnon of Gladstone; grandchildren, Michelle (Mike) Oxford, Melanie (Alan) Thorsen, Melissa (Corey) Wicklund, Jaime (Tom) Granquist, Hailey Bedard, Cathi (Chad) Carlson, Paula (Pete) Trapani, Emily (Brian) Rush, Rick Ness, Randy (Jen) Ness, Jordan Gagnon, Travis Gagnon; 11 great grandchildren; sister, Shirley Bellin of Quinnesec, MI; and many nieces and nephews.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine; infant daughters, Mary Ann and Linda; and brothers, Richard and George Jr.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2016 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. Delta County Veterans Council will have military rites at 3 p.m. Escanaba Knights of Columbus will have services at 4:30. Visitation will also be held on Monday, June 13, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will follow the visitation at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 13, at St. Joseph and St. Patrick Catholic Church with Rev. Eric Olson officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.

Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Bedard family.
