Joseph P. Picard, “Smokin’ Joe”, 71, Bark River, passed away on Monday morning, February 15, 2016 at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.

He was born on July 6, 1945 in Escanaba, son of the late John J. and Marie (Anderson) Picard.

Joe graduated from Holy Name Catholic High School in 1963 and continued his education at Bay de Noc Community College where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in automotive repair.

On June 26, 1965, Joe married Barbara J. Wheeler at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Spalding.

Joe served his country during the Viet Nam War in the United States Marie Corps from August 22, 1966 until he was honorably discharged on August 21, 1970. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Meritorious Unit Citation.

He was employed at Camcar in Rockford, IL, Harnischfeger and NewPage. Joe retired in 2008.

Joe was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Bark River and the Bark River American Legion Rheaume-Knauf Post 438. He enjoyed hunting, especially rabbits, fishing and gardening.

He is survived by his loving wife, Barb of Bark River; children, Sandra (Todd) Sundquist and Patrick (Caroline) Picard; grandchildren, Bryce Sundquist, Brett Sundquist, Nate Picard, and Braedy Picard; brother, John (Joyce) Picard; sisters, Mary Lou (Harlan) LaPalm, and Donna (Wendell) Tourangeau; and many nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Pete, Jerry, and infant brother Gary; and an infant son in 1970.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Bark River. The Bark River American Legion Rheaume-Knauf Post 438 will have military rites at 5 p.m. and parish prayers to follow at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Thursday morning, February 18, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church from 10 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with Rev. Darryl Pepin officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.

Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Schaffer.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Picard family.
