LaVerne B. Bell, 82, of Harris, passed away early Saturday morning, January 2, 2016 at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility.

She was born on March 8, 1933 at the family farm in Bark River, daughter of Arthur and Gladys (Bruce) Sundquist. LaVerne was raised in Bark River and graduated from Bark River Harris High School.

On May 29, 1952 LaVerne married Robert G. Bell at Salem Lutheran Church in Bark River. He preceded her in death.

LaVerne worked for Bark River State Bank for 18 years and then two years at Northern Michigan Bank before she attended Cosmetology School in Escanaba. She was self-employed as a cosmetologist out of her home for 20 years until her retirement at the age of 63.

She was a very active member of the Bark River Salem Lutheran Church until 2006 when she became a Catholic and then joined St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. LaVerne was an active member of the church choir. She was also active with the Bark River American Legion Auxiliary, Bark River Lions Heart of the North and Third Order of St. Francis.

LaVerne enjoyed being with her family, quilting, playing piano, and loved country music.

She is survived by her son, Bruce (Jill) Bell of Walterboro, SC; three daughters, Lynn (Dennis) Paquin of Wilson, Kathy (Bill) Beattie of Gulf Breeze, FL and Mary (Jerry) Kirschner of Spalding; ten grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren; brother, Francis (Kay) Sundquist of Bark River; sister, Charlotte (Tom) Rose of Marshall, WI; two sisters in law, Arlene Sundquist and Kolet Sundquist; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Rodney and Spencer Sundquist.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Bark River. The Bark River American Legion Auxiliary will have a service at 5 p.m. Visitation will also continue Wednesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home before the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church with Rev. Paul Nomellini officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.

Burial will be in Gardens of Rest Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to the family and a memorial will be established at a later date in LaVerne’s name.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Bell family.
