Devere “Jim” Hinkson, 92, of Escanaba, passed away on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he has resided for six years.

Jim was born on April 9, 1923 in Manistique, son of Fred C. and Irene (Schuster) Hinkson. He was raised in Manistique and attended school at St. Francis De Sales School.

On May 21, 1941, Jim married Melissa P. “Babe” Curtis in Sault Ste. Marie. She preceded him in death on May 23, 1994.

A WWII veteran, Jim served in the U.S. Army from July 12, 1944 until his honorable discharge on December 13, 1945. He participated in the Rhineland Campaign and was honored with the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with Combat Infantryman Badge, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Ribbon.

Jim was employed at Swanson Trucking in Manistique until he was hired at Clairmont Transfer in 1949. He was fondly known as “Gentleman Jim” among his co-workers and other truck drivers. He retired from Clairmont Transfer on January 31, 1985.

In 1949, Jim and Babe moved their family to Escanaba.

He enjoyed spending time with his brothers four wheeling, hunting, and going to their family camp for hunting season.

Jim was a member of St. Anne’s Church and the Amvets.

Among his survivors include his two daughters, Annis (Gary) Bengston and Darlene (Paul) Anderson both of Escanaba; daughter in law, Connie Carney of Manistique; eight grandchildren, Julia Schroeder, Shelly Murray, Ellen Wunder, Paulette (Randy) Wickham, Greg Anderson, Laurie (Micky) Schneur, Billy Carney, and Brenda (Rob) Bosanik; 15 great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; sister, Loretta Pistulka, Paul (Pat) Hinkson and Freddy (Barb) Hinkson all of Manistique; sister in law, Irene Hinkson; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Melissa; he was preceded in death by his son, Rodney Carney in 1988; and siblings, LeVerle Fisher and Chancey “Bidge” Hinkson.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, November 17th from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. The Delta County Veterans Council will have military rites at 4:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 6 p.m. at St. Anne’s Church with Rev. Fran DeGroot officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.

Burial will be in Gardens of Rest Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Jim’s name to the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Hinkson family with arrangements.
