Bernice Isabelle Wieciech, “Grandma Bernie”, 90, of Bark River, moved on to eternal life on October 15, 2015.

Bernice was born December 17, 1924 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, the daughter of Harry and Florence (Finnerty) Demsky.

She graduated from Dominican All Girls High School with the class of 1942. Bernice continued her education at Northern Michigan University.

On August 16, 1952 she married the love of her life, Edward Wieciech.

Her life was focused on her family, church, and giving back to others. Bernice was known for her kind smile, willingness to help anyone, her strong spirit, and her spunky attitude. Her zest for life was contagious and she refused to slow down. Bernice never retired as she stayed active as a volunteer with the Foster Grandparents program without pause for the past 5 years. In addition, she was a member of the Red Hat Society, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, St. Anne's Society, RSVP board, FACE program, Lion's Club, and American Legion Auxiliary. In addition, she enjoyed teaching Catechism and Vacation Bible School.

Professionally, and early in her career, she worked as a radio-logical technician for the state tuberculosis sanitarium. Later in her career, and for many years, she worked for North Central Schools as a teacher’s aide, librarian, and audio visual director.

Bernice is survived by her sister, Jean (Ken) LeBoeuf: two daughters, Patti Wieciech and Beth (Richard) Gauthier both of Bark River, MI; three grandchildren, Blake Crabb and Ryan (Erin) Gauthier of Grand Rapids, MI, and Brooke (Brock Mercier) Crabb of Marquette, MI; great grandchild, Andrew Gauthier of Grand Rapids, MI; brother-in-law, George LaCoursier of Powers, MI; son-in-law, Joe Tremblay of Sault Sainte Marie, MI; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Bernice is joining her parents, Harry and Florence Demsky; sister, Harriet LaCoursier; husband Edward Wieciech; and daughter, Bonnie Crabb-Tremblay, in eternal life.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be directed to the Foster Grandparents program: 507 1st Avenue North, Escanaba, Michigan 49829.
