Ruby A. Moersch, 83, a long-time resident of Escanaba, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2015, at her home and with her loved ones around her, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Ruby was born on December 13, 1931 in Gourley Township, daughter of the late Joseph and Agnes (Arnold) Motto. She was exceptionally gifted and managed to graduate from Harris High School at the tender age of 15, married a few years later and worked a large dairy farm and logging business, while also waitressing at the Highland Golf Club and Swift’s Restaurant for many years. Ruby then went on to obtain her associate’s degree in nursing from Bay de Noc Community College. As an LPN, Ruby was employed by OSF St. Francis Hospital and City Drug Store, and patients and co-workers alike still describe Ruby as always being incredibly hard-working and wonderfully compassionate.

On December 26, 1975, Ruby married the late Frank Moersch in Escanaba and they lovingly enjoyed over 24 years together until his death in January, 2000.

Ruby thoroughly enjoyed caring for her beautiful lawn and flower gardens, and she had a tremendous love of dogs. She was also well-known for her independent spirit and quick sense of humor.

Ruby is survived by her daughter, Peg (John) Larson of Lake Leelanau, MI; step-daughter, Mary Lynn (Robert) Fillion of Escanaba; step-son Mike (Mary) Moersch of Lansing; three grandchildren, Christine (Kurt) Metzler; Katie (Jerry) Ciha, and Natasha (Tom) Oliver; six great grandchildren, Nicholas and Natalie Metzler; Anthony, Alexander and Annalise Ciha, and Robert Oliver, and several nieces and nephews.

Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Frank in 2000; son, Edward Palka, Jr. “Chip” in 2010, and her brothers, Edward, Stuart, Robert, Donald and Ronald Motto.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2015 from 12:30 to 1:00 PM at the Gardens of Rest Cemetery Chapel. Funeral services will follow in the chapel at 1 PM with Deacon Terry Saunders officiating. Entombment will follow the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Delta Animal Shelter. Envelopes will be available during the visitation.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Moersch family.
