George W. Terrien, 90, Cornell, passed away at his home on May 31, 2015, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Cornell on December 14, 1924, the son of Joseph W. and Norma I. (Colburn) Terrien.

On August 13, 1949, George married Cecilia Verbrigghe at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Perkins.

He was a life-long resident of Cornell and was proud of his family farm where he and Cecilia milked cows and grew potatoes for many years. They converted to raising beef cattle in 1967 .

George retired from Harnischfeger in 1982.

George was a dedicated member of Holy Family Church in Flat Rock and was a member of the smear league. He played for the White Birch baseball team for many years and was a member of the Michigan Potato Growers Association in the 1950’s and received many awards for his farming abilities. He also served many years on the Cornell Township Board of Review.

He loved to hunt, play baseball, and was known to say a rosary in preparation for cheering on the Green Bay Packers.

George is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Cecilia; daughters, Linda (Dale) Plouff of Flat Rock, Carol (Barry) Porter of Gladstone, Janet (Bill) Shelley of Homestead, FL, Barbara (Matt) Guindon of Cornell; foster children, Mary (Wayne) Gaus of Kipling and Chuck (Tina) Godin of Illinois; sister, Norma Mattonen of Gladstone; 14 grandchildren, Allan (Amy) Porter, Michelle Bratonia, Mike (Amy) Plouff, Sarah Porter, Laura (Charles) Nelson, Paul (Rachel) Guindon, Luke (Megan) Guindon, Shannon (Brandon) Gauer, Joseph Guindon, AnnMarie (Nick) Folcik, Christopher, Olivia, David and Mikayla Shelley; 15 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Thompson; and brothers, Carl, Bernith, and John Terrien.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2015, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Friday at Holy Family Church in Flat Rock officiated by Rev. John Longbucco. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.

Burial will be in Gardens of Rest Cemetery.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Terrien family.
