Walter P. “Wally” Flath, 84, Escanaba, passed away on Sunday, August 3, 2014, at St. Francis Hospital.

He was born in Ford River Township on October 28, 1929, the son of Julius and Celia (Simon) Flath.

Wally graduated from Escanaba High School in 1948, and was drafted by the St Louis Cardinals which was the start of his 30 year baseball legacy including the Escanaba Bears, Bark River and the Escanaba Merchants.

Wally married Theresa Ann LaCasse at St. Anne Church. She preceded him in death on January 23, 1979.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from March 19, 1951 to March 28, 1953 when he was honorably discharged.

Wally was employed as a foreman with Olsen & Flath Construction, Clairmont Transfer, and Gross Trucking.

Wally was a member of St. Anne’s Parish and was a Life Member of Escanaba Elks Lodge 354.

He enjoyed playing cards, bowling, hunting deer and partridge, and picking berries.

On May 14, 2014, Wally took part in the U.P. Honor Flight and traveled to Washington, D.C.

Wally is survived by his companion Pat Friets; son, Jon W. Flath of Escanaba; daughter Jody Flath of Bridgeport, MI; son-in-law, Bob Stenfors of Bark River; two grandsons, Riley and Kolby Stenfors; and special friends Lynnette Royer and Tony Quist.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Theresa; daughter, Jane M. Stenfors; and siblings, John, Ralph, Earl, Mae, and Bill.

Visititation will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. Delta County Veterans will hold a service at 3 p.m. and Elks Lodge 354 will hold a memorial service at 4 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will follow the visitation at St. Anne Church at 6 p.m. with Rev. Fran DeGroot officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.

Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Flath family.
